Fever is the body's natural response to infection or illness. While often uncomfortable, low-grade fevers help the immune system fight off pathogens. The underlying cause — whether viral, bacterial, or inflammatory — guides the appropriate treatment.
Most fevers in adults resolve within 1 to 3 days with rest, hydration, and over-the-counter medications such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen. If the fever persists or climbs above 103°F, further evaluation is needed.
Once the underlying cause is treated and the fever breaks, fatigue and mild body aches may linger for a day or two. Continuing to rest and stay hydrated supports recovery.
